What is a perineal cooling pad liner, and why does it help?
After a vaginal birth, the perineal area, the tissue between the vaginal opening and the anus, goes through significant trauma. Swelling, soreness, bruising, and in many cases stitches from tears or episiotomy. The standard postpartum maxi pad addresses the bleeding. It does nothing for the swelling or discomfort.
A cooling pad liner is a medicated layer you place on top of your regular maxi pad. Why witch hazel? What does it actually do?
Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a plant-derived astringent that has been used in wound care and skin treatment for centuries. Its active tannins give it natural anti-inflammatory, astringent, and mild anaesthetic properties, which is why it's been a midwifery-recommended ingredient for postpartum perineal care for decades.
Applied to the perineal area after birth, witch hazel helps reduce swelling and inflammation, soothes burning and itching from perineal tears and stitches, provides mild pain relief through its cooling and astringent action, and addresses postpartum haemorrhoids, which are extremely common after both vaginal birth and the pushing stage of labour.

How to use your cooling pad liners
THREE SECONDS OF EFFORT. IMMEDIATE RELIEF. WORTH IT.
- Open the resealable pouch. Remove one cooling pad liner. Close the pouch immediately to keep the remaining liners moist and effective.
- Place on top of your maxi pad. Lay the liner flat across the full length of your pad before pulling on your underwear. The witch hazel side faces up toward the body.
- Pull on your underwear as normal. The liner stays in place. The witch hazel begins working immediately on contact with the perineal area.
- Replace with every pad change. Use a fresh liner every time you change your maxi pad. Do not reuse. Do not flush, bin used liners.
